String to identify

Identify before decoding

An unknown string may be a byte representation, a transport encoding or a classical cipher. This tool tests several interpretations locally in your browser and ranks the most plausible results. A high score means the syntax matches and the output looks readable; it is not cryptographic proof.

Structured encodings

Base64, Base64URL, hexadecimal, binary, URL percent-encoding, HTML entities and Unicode escapes are tested when their syntax matches.

Codes and simple ciphers

The decoder also tries Morse, A1Z26, ROT13, ROT47, Atbash and multiple Caesar shifts, then compares output readability.

Local analysis

The text is analyzed by JavaScript in your browser. When a format is identified, a related tool can be opened for a more focused workflow.

What the score means

The score combines input-format compatibility with the proportion of printable characters in the output. Short strings are inherently ambiguous: 4142 can be plain text, a number or hexadecimal. Always check the context.
